LOST LAMBS
“When a lamb strays, it’s usually lost to wolves, vulnerable without its flock. But sometimes, just sometimes, if it’s lucky, it finds a new one.”

The Flynn family is going off the rails. Bud’s wife has proposed a “nonconsensual nonmonogamous” stage of their marriage. One of their teenage daughters is dating a soldier nicknamed War Crimes Wes; another may be corresponding with a radicalized would-be terrorist. Their youngest daughter’s conviction that a sinister tech magnate is spying on their town is devolving into paranoia. If this sounds dark - somehow it’s not? Every chapter made me laugh out loud - this is the funniest audiobook I’ve listened to in a long time!

I loved watching this wacky family descend into the unhinged abyss only to pull themselves out again in the most absurd ways. I’ve seen comps ranging from Jonathan Franzen to Wes Anderson and agree, but to me the Flynns are way more endearing. This novel explores themes of conformity and belonging as it turns the literary dysfunctional family genre on its head - but mainly I just thought this story about a bunch of weirdos who are stuck with each other was a total hoot! If you love quirky satire and dry wit, I definitely recommend this one.

The local church volunteer Mrs. Winkle has a young daughter Perry (yes - her name is Perry Winkle) who eats only grilled cheese and tomato soup. IDK about you but where I am, it’s 9 degrees outside so I think Perry has the right idea. We had this roasted tomato and red pepper soup at my book club holiday party hosted by my amazingly talented friend @thebalaboostachef , and everything she makes is next level delish. Here’s a similar one ! Pair with Perry’s grilled cheese!

I have a major audiobook hangover now - what should I listen to next?
