LIFE & DEATH & GIANTS

Oh my heart! I loved this novel so much. Life & Death & Giants is the story of Gabriel Fisher who, large from birth, grows to become a literal giant in his Amish community. Told from the perspective of the people who raise him, this story is as much theirs as Gabriel’s, and all of the ways his size and very existence transforms them. It’s about humans and their connection to the natural world, and also about empathy and open hearts. In other words, perfect for right now.

There’s so much to love about this book, which is grounded in emotional connection and humanity. At its heart it is a novel about balance: between tradition and modern life, faith and science, community and individuality. The story also beautifully incorporates animals and the many ways they can enhance our lives if we let them. If you loved Theo of Golden or The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, I highly recommend this deeply moving story.

This is not my typical book/bake pairing: the only thing this novel has in common with these cinnamon buns is that I finished both during the snowstorm! I was so eager to share this novel that I decided to do a Big Baking Project with whatever I had on hand, and guys this recipe is actually INSANE. It’s not a quick one: you have to knead and prove the dough, and make a separate filling and icing. But that just makes the results even sweeter. Save for a snow day project with little ones, or a special breakfast for a kiddo home from college, or a holiday. It’s my new favorite!
