BROKEN COUNTRY
Broken Country is a beautiful, fan-favorite, crowd-pleasing, guaranteed slump-buster that will tug at your heartstrings and inevitably land on countless best of 2025 lists. This story follows Beth, a farmer’s wife grieving the loss of her young son, and the events that transpire when her former lover moves back to her hometown in the English countryside. Its atmospheric setting, passionate young love and murder trial have spurred comps to Where the Crawdads Sing - but Broken Country has its own unique story to tell, one that is worth its well deserved hype. THANK YOU @reesesbookclub for this fantastic book. 💛
This is a love story, to be sure, but a nuanced one that will leave you questioning the characters’ choices, and conflicted about your own allegiances. It’s also a well paced mystery with foreboding hints at what’s to come, and surprises that kept me guessing until the end. Heartbreak and tragedy abound, so be sure to check content warnings. If you wept at The Bridges of Madison Country, and are drawn to stories where love and fate are intertwined, you’ll want to add this one to your TBR and your book club list right away!
This story mentions a pineapple upside down birthday cake for Beth’s son, his favorite. I love desserts that look fancy but are secretly easy to make, like this one - and the gooey pineapple baked in brown sugar and butter is soo good. The secret is a dependable springform pan that won’t leak pineapple juice all over your oven! This recipe will be in my story and then as always,
